How to use Firefox keywords instead of URL-bar autocompletete

disclaimer: this page lacks proper terms; there probably exist real names for the things mentioned

Problem

When starting to type something in the URL-/browse-bar in default-config Firefox 30, I see 2 things:

For me, I don't care much about the 1st thing, but the 2nd is annoying when manually editing what's in the URL-bar (I do this e.g. with Fossil URLs).

Turn off autocomplete

To turn off:

Replace with something nicer: 1-letter keywords

I like 1-letter keywords/shortcuts to refer to URLs I visit often. Keywords can be longer than 1 letter, but less is more, so let's keep it short.

As I understand it, keywords can be used in at least 2 ways.

Keyword-with-argument (e.g. 'google something')

To add:

Parameterless keyword (just go to a site)
